Charleston, WV (AP) -- Gov. Joe Manchin has awarded commendations to 49 West Virginia businesses that exported to a new country within the past year.

The governor's office said Thursday the total was the highest since 2006, when 45 businesses received commendations.

Among the recipients were Beckley-based shaving products maker The Gentlemen's Quarter, which the governor's office says added exports to Mongolia, China, Hong Kong, Finland and 16 other countries.

Also gaining recognition was Paden City-based Marble King, which added exports to Mexico.

The governor's office says the value of West Virginia exports increased 41 percent last year to $5.6 billion, compared with 12 percent for the U.S. as a whole.

Coal exports soared in 2008 for a variety of reasons.
