Charleston, WV (AP) -- A St. Albans man has been sentenced to a year in prison for fatally shooting a teenager during a hunting trip.
Twenty-year-old Andrew Scott Hardin admitted he accidentally shot Nicholas Caldwell in April 2008 as they were turkey hunting, didn't stop to check on the 16-year-old victim afterward and went home without telling anyone about the incident.
Hardin pleaded guilty in April to a felony count of wanton endangerment along with two misdemeanors: killing a person while hunting and failure to render aid.
Kanawha County Circuit Judge Duke Bloom on Friday also ordered Hardin to pay $6,000 to the state's crime victims compensation fund as restitution for funeral expenses.
