Charleston, WV (AP) -- A black bear wandering around West Virginia's capital doesn't raise many eyebrows. It is the state animal, after all.

Charleston Police Lt. C.E. Sisson says a young black bear made an appearance in the city's Kanawha City area Sunday afternoon.

The bear swam across the Kanawha River to the bank near the Charleston Moose Lodge.

City police officers, Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies and state Division of Natural Resources workers were waiting there for the animal.

Sisson says they herded the bear into the woods.

DNR officials say bears aren't a threat to humans in most cases.

But they advise residents to secure garbage cans and clean up pet food to eliminate food sources.
