Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- The cost of renovating a bridge on a major thoroughfare in Charleston could go up after a contractor discovered more problems.
Wiseman Construction says deteriorating steel was found on the Elk River Bridge on Kanawha Boulevard while the company was repairing a back wall underneath the span.
Replacing or repairing the steel could increase the $400,000 project's cost by $50,000.
The city was expected to receive an estimate Tuesday.
Andy Wiseman with Wiseman Construction says the steel might last another four to five years.
But he says waiting to address the problem would increase the cost further.
