Ohio Transit System Raising Fares Again

Dayton, Ohio (AP) -- To help close a budget gap, one of Ohio's largest transit systems is raising bus fares for the third time since 2005.

The board of the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority voted Tuesday to raise adult fares by 25 cents to $1.75, beginning Aug. 1.

The buses carry some 40,000 passengers per day in Dayton and the surrounding area.

Transit authority executive director Mark Donaghy recommended the fare hike to help deal with a projected $3.1 million budget deficit for this year.

Officials say the agency's budget is being squeezed by a sharp decline in local sales tax revenues, which provide nearly 60 percent of the bus system's funding.
