Charleston, W.Va. (Ap) -- West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin says he accepts the findings of an inmate overcrowding study and is working to determine how to implement the 14 recommendations.
One of the recommendations called for the state to spend about $200 million to build a new 1,200-bed medium-security prison.
In addition to the new prison, other recommendations for easing overcrowding include modifying sentencing laws, providing treatment for substance abusers who commit crimes and expanding community sentencing programs.
Manchin called for the study because the number of inmates in the state's 14 prisons exceeds the 5,300-inmate capacity.
Spokesman Matt Turner says Manchin plans to meet with lawmakers to discuss ways to implement the recommendations.
