Christmas Traffic On W.V. Turnpike Increases

CHARLESTON, W.V. (AP) - The West Virginia Turnpike saw an increase in Christmas holiday traffic. But the size of that increase depends on which year is used for comparison.

Teresa Nissel with the West Virginia Parkways Authority says holiday traffic was up 12 percent compared to last year.

But Nissel tells the Charleston Gazette that comparison isn't accurate because Christmas fell on a Saturday last year.

The last time Christmas fell on a Sunday was in 2005. Using 2005 as a comparison, Nissel says turnpike traffic was up about 2.5 percent.

Tollbooth coordinator Jay Ball says the biggest travel days were Dec. 23 and Dec. 26, when about 130,000 transactions were made. On an average day, transactions total about 96,000.
