UPDATE 2/6/2014 10:50 AM

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The state prisons agency agreed to reimburse county taxpayers for the autopsy of Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro after his prison suicide last year.

Gary Mohr, director of the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, cited the "unique and extraordinary" circumstances of Castro's September death at the Correctional Reception Center in Pickaway County.

Mohr agreed late last year to foot the $1,100 bill.

Though Castro's autopsy was conducted in Franklin County, state law places the responsibility for autopsy costs on the county where the death occurred.

The 53-year-old Castro hanged himself while awaiting transfer to a permanent prison to serve a life sentence plus 1,000 years for imprisoning and raping three women in his Cleveland home over a decade.

UPDATE 10/17/2013 11:30 AM

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Two leaders at the prison where Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro was found dead in his cell are reassigned.

The changes at the Correctional Reception Center south of Columbus were announced this week in an internal memo from Ohio's prisons chief.

The warden will move to the same job at Madison Correctional Institution. The second-in-command, the deputy warden of operations, will have a similar role at Richland Correctional Institution in Mansfield. They'll be replaced by the Richland warden and deputy warden.

The memo didn't explain why or mention Castro, whose September hanging death put the facility under the microscope. Two corrections officers are accused of falsifying logs about when guards checked on Castro.

He was imprisoned for holding three women captive for a decade and raping them.

UPDATE 10/10/13 11:40 AM

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio officials suggest in a new report it's possible Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro may have died of auto-erotic asphyxiation, not suicide.

A report from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction says Castro's pants and underwear were pulled down to his ankles when he was found. It also says Castro did not leave a suicide note and "multiple levels of assessment" did not find tendency toward suicide.

The state forwarded those facts to police to consider the possibility of auto-erotic asphyxiation, whereby individuals achieve sexual satisfaction by briefly choking themselves into unconsciousness.

The report also says two prison guards falsified logs documenting their observation of Castro in the hours before he killed himself. The report says video indicates no checks were done on Castro at least eight times before he died.

UPDATE 10/10/13 11:15 AM

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio officials say two prison guards falsified logs documenting their observation of Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro in the hours before he killed himself.

A report from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction says video indicates no checks were done on Castro at least eight times the afternoon and evening before he died.

The report released Thursday says checks were done properly twice before Castro hanged himself on Sept. 3 at a prison reception center south of Columbus.

The report also says an ambulance contracted to provide medical assistance at the prison was significantly late in arriving, but the delay didn't affect the outcome.

The report also says prison staff failed to make sure Castro watched a suicide prevention video when he first arrived in August.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Coroner's investigative notes say Cleveland kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro committed suicide by hanging himself with a sheet attached to a window hinge in his prison cell.

The preliminary report by the Franklin County Coroner viewed Friday by The Associated Press says Castro was found facing the door of the cell with his knees bent.

The report says two sheets of paper were found in the cell, one with Bible verses written on it and the other with the names of Castro's children and grandchildren.

A Bible open to the book of John was also found in the cell.

Coroner Jan Gorniak says she's awaiting toxicology results before issuing a final report on Castro's Sept. 3 suicide.
