CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A Democrat in the House of Delegates says he's switching to the Republican Party and plans to seek a state Senate seat.
Ryan Ferns told The Associated Press on Monday he believes the GOP "is best suited to take West Virginia forward."
The two-term delegate from Ohio County says he plans to seek the Senate seat held by Ohio County Democrat Rocky Fitzsimmons.
State GOP Chairman Conrad Lucas says news conferences are planned Monday in Wheeling and Charleston.
In June, Ferns said he had no plans to switch parties after voting for Republican Tim Armstead of Kanawha County in the race for House speaker won by Democrat Tim Miley.
Ferns says that vote was a statement of his displeasure with the way outside interests influence the House speaker's race.
