BELLE, W.Va. (AP) - DuPont delays a project to dismantle a gravity-powered hillside pipeline overlooking its plant in Belle.

DuPont planned to use a trackhoe-type excavator to remove the pipeline. But the company has decided to look for a safer method because of the steep slope.

Belle plant manager Jim O'Connor says the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The pipeline once provided water for the production of ammonia. Two systems with four pipelines were installed in 1930 and were shut down in the 1950s.

The pipes sent water down the hillside. Momentum then pushed the water back up the hill for recycling.
