CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Some Republicans are getting caught in the crossfire amid efforts to make President Barack Obama a West Virginia campaign issue.
TV ads from the Republican Governors Association seek to exploit Obama's unpopularity in West Virginia by trying to link him to some recent state legislation.
But Democrats are responding with automated phone calls reminding voters that GOP lawmakers helped pass both bills in question.
One RGA ad also credits U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin for suing Obama's Environmental Protection Agency while governor. But Manchin's Republican opponent has been trying to cast the Democrat as in league with Obama and his EPA.
A GOP ad targeting U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, meanwhile, seems to suggest that Obama may win re-election.
Republicans allege the robocalls are misleading and don't tell voters who funded them.
