Kasich Not Sure About Welfare Drug Tests

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio Gov. John Kasich says he's not sure about the idea of requiring welfare recipients to pass a drug test.

He says one factor to consider is what happens to children when parents fail drug tests and are denied benefits. The Columbus Dispatch reports the Republican governor said in response to an audience question at an event Monday that the interests of taxpayers must be balanced against what's right and compassionate.

A Republican-backed bill calls for tying Ohio welfare assistance to drug tests. In response, a Democratic lawmaker has proposed that elected officials and recipients of federal bailout money be drug-tested, too.
