WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (AP) - The Mingo County Commission names a permanent successor to a sheriff shot to death in April.

Sgt. James Smith will take over the Sheriff's Department on Tuesday.

Media outlets say the commissioners selected the former chief deputy from among four candidates in a special meeting Monday.

Earlier this month, chief tax deputy Pam Dixon took over as interim sheriff after the widow of former Sheriff Eugene Crum resigned.

Rosie Crum was tapped to serve as interim sheriff just days after her husband was fatally shot while eating lunch in his car in downtown Williamson.

Tennis Maynard is awaiting an October trial on murder charges.

Smith says 2013 has been a bad year for the county, and it's time to reverse course.
