UPDATE 8/6/2014 3:50 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Attorney General Mike DeWine says Ohio's crime lab received 8,381 untested rape kits as it seeks DNA matches that could help solve reported sexual assaults.

DeWine's office says Ohio officials have tested more than half of those rape kits. That led to about 1,600 DNA matches in a criminal database. DeWine says that as DNA matches are found, the information is returned to local law enforcement to pursue charges.

The DNA testing led to 170 indictments in Cuyahoga County alone.

The testing initiative was first announced in December 2011. It offered free DNA testing to law enforcement agencies with untested rape kits in which a crime was believed to have been committed. A total of 141 law enforcement agencies submitted untested rape kits.

UPDATE 4/3/2014 11:25 AM

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's attorney general says an initiative to test previously untested rape kits has led to more than 1,000 matches to DNA profiles in a law enforcement database.

A statement from Attorney General Mike DeWine says more than 6,400 sexual assault kits have been submitted by 125 law enforcement agencies since the program began in 2012. More than 3,200 kits have been tested in the ongoing effort to solve more reported sexual assaults with the help of DNA matches.

Information on any match is sent back to the appropriate local law enforcement agency to see if it can advance an investigation.

DeWine says the testing initiative has led to dozens of indictments, including nearly 100 in northeast Ohio's Cuyahoga County, which includes Cleveland.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio Attorney General's Office says it tested more than 3,000 rape kits as it searches for DNA matches that could help solve sexual assaults.

That's more than half of the 5,850 kits that law enforcement agencies have submitted to the office since Attorney General Mike DeWine announced the testing initiative in December 2011.

The office offered DNA testing to any law enforcement agency with untested rape kits in which a crime was believed to have been committed. Many of the kits submitted for testing are between 10 and 20 years old.

DeWine says the testing has led to 992 hits in the state's DNA database.

In Cuyahoga County in northeast Ohio, prosecutors and investigators generated 85 indictments as a result of the testing initiative.
