Ohio Studies Centralizing Local Tax Collections

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio cities and towns are resisting something being studied by the Kasich administration, to have the state collect local taxes.

Ohio Tax Commissioner Joseph Testa tells The Columbus Dispatch it's an idea that has his department "in the investigating stage." He says the state's current web of municipal taxes is too complex and bad for business.

The Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants last year recommended that the state look into centralizing local tax collections, possibly by piggybacking them on state tax returns.

But the Ohio Municipal League opposes the concept of centralized local taxation. League legislative representative Kent Scarrett says communities are concerned that they'd wind up losing revenue.
