COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The private vendor with the contract to feed Ohio prison inmates says it will work with the corrections agency to address several recommendations to fix problems.

Ideas raised by a legislative oversight committee include returning to a larger ladle size to scoop food, to moving Dumpsters away from loading docks to prevent vermin from getting inside prisons.

The state fined Philadelphia-based Aramark Correctional Services $272,000 for numerous violations in its year-old contract, including running out of main courses and reports of maggots in food preparation areas.

State Sen. Shirley Smith, chair of the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee, says her top priority is ensuring that inmates are treated with integrity.

Smith, a Cleveland Democrat, wants the quality of food improved, especially at dinner, and portions increased.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The director of a state prisons oversight committee says there appears to be legitimate concerns about the job a private vendor is doing feeding inmates in Ohio prisons.

Joanna Saul, chief of the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee, says the quality of food has gone down since Philadelphia-based Aramark Correctional Services began work last September.

Saul says attention to sanitation appears to be lacking, Aramark employees lack sufficient security training and Aramark's low wages lead to high turnover and a temptation to smuggle in contraband.

Saul told members of her committee Wednesday food service concerns are more significant than in the past.

Aramark called complaints about its service part of an anti-privatization effort and says it is making steady progress managing operations.
