Still Little Demand For W.V.'s 2nd Area Code

MORGANTOWN, W.V. (AP) - West Virginia's second area code is nearly three years old but there's still not much demand for it.

The 681 area code went into effect in late March 2009.

Frontier spokesman Dan Page tells The Dominion Post that the company only has 87 accounts in the state with the 681 area code. He says these accounts could include multiple telephone numbers.

Comcast, nTelos and West Side Communications representatives say their companies still have numbers with the original 304 area code available. None has issued any with the 681 area code.

Sprint spokeswoman Claudia Fiegel declined to say how many numbers the company has issued with the 681 area code. But she says the switch has gone fairly well.
