Trial To Begin Monday For Massey Security Chief
CHARLESTON, W.V. (AP) - A jury has been seated, and the trial of the former security chief at the Upper Big Branch mine is set to get under way Monday.
Court officials say opening statements before U.S. District Judge Irene Berger are set for 9:30 a.m. in Beckley. It took about 3? hours Friday to seat the jurors.
On Thursday, federal prosecutors dropped a charge against Hughie Elbert Stover, who is accused of ordering a subordinate to destroy thousands of security-related documents.
Stover had been accused of lying to investigators during two interviews following the April 2010 disaster that killed 29 men, but prosecutors dropped a charge that he misled investigators during the second interview.
Stover's trial will be the first criminal proceeding to come from the nation's deadliest coal mine explosion in decades.
