CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin is heading toward the fall election with a $2.2 million campaign balance, the healthiest among West Virginia's congressional candidates.
The freshman Democrat amassed more than $843,000 during the last three months. That's also the largest sum during the quarter for the state's contenders for federal office.
A report for Manchin's GOP opponent, John Raese, wasn't immediately available. The Morgantown multimillionaire had $106,000 as of April 18.
Incumbent U.S. Reps. David McKinley and Shelley Moore Capito each ended June with balances above $1.3 million. U.S. Rep Nick Rahall had just below $1 million.
A Democrat, Rahall faces Republican state legislator Rick Snuffer. The challenger reported a $150,000 balance but nearly outraised Rahall during the three-month period. U.S. House Speaker John Boehner headlined a June fundraiser for Snuffer.
