W.V. ACLU Says County Shouldn't Fund Jesus Fest

CLARKSBURG, W.V. (AP) - A civil liberties group says the Harrison County Commission's support of an annual Christian festival in Clarksburg is unconstitutional.

Media outlets report that the American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia has asked the commission to stop providing funding and its endorsement for Jesus Fest.

In a Dec. 22 letter to the commission, state ACLU executive director Franklin Crabtree says the First Amendment's Establishment Clause prohibits government sponsorship, financial support and active involvement in religious activity.

Crabtree's letter says the commission has provided $2,000 for the festival each year for the past five years.

The letter has been submitted to county prosecutor Joe Shaffer for an opinion.

Commissioner Mike Romano tells The Exponent Telegram that if there's validity to the ACLU's claims, the commission needs to take appropriate action.

PS: if this is as you say "a Christian nation" why is there not one mention of god or jesus in the constitution of this country?.... because it's a lie and you know it. lies in the name of god are still lies Doris.

Giving 2000 bucks is not a "state religion"...it is helping a festival. For those who do not know, the constitution it means a "State Run Religion" such as the Church of England in the 1600's please go back to school and learn your history. Our fore fathers never meant to keep religion out of the public eye..and you morons know that, you use it as an excuse to further your own atheistic agendas. You will never re write history...www.wallbuilders.com to see exactly how many documents spoke the name of Jesus and God in them...that will keep some of you up at night!!!

Did you happen to see the part where the wallbuilders followers want to force us all at gunpoint to their ways? that's quite American..... there is no Christian nation here, never was and never will be..... freedom and religion are mutually exclusive.

I wish the ACLU would stand up for my right to not receive calls from telemarketers. On the religious angle...I could not begin to care less one way or tother. Bigger fish to fry out there.

I would not spend a cent and don't think gays and lesbians need to be in the spotlight or given any attention or donations of any sort! It is just wrong for the people that support that kind!

I think you have asked for something and got denied and your jealous like I said grow up please !!!!

The Constitution says only that there shall not be an establishment of religion, i.e. a state-backed religion such as the Church of England was in the time of the American Revolution, and there shall not be limits on the free exercise of religion. The phrase "separation of church and state" was a phrase coined by Thomas Jefferson; it is not found anywhere in the Constitution, and it is not law.

So then why are the Christians up in arms over the muslims doing exactly what the christians are doing in this country....trying to force their religion on those who do not believe in their god? Amazingly there is not one mention of "God" or "jesus" in that contitution either....Yet they still keep shrieking "Christian nation"... it's disgusting to me.

It's a good start. I await the standard "those aren't the "real" Christians" cop out...............unreal.

It is sad that the posters below hate the Constitution and the protections it offers every American.EVERY AMERICAN!!! There is no state sponsored religions here. Look up the horus myth and see exactly where the jesus myth came from.... it is for nothing but to gather power over people and treasure.

And just look how they throw out their "Christianity" as their shield as well. Do read up on Horus though, and the many similarities with the Jesus myth...

Religious organizations don't pay taxes and don't deserve funding from tax revenues. Christians owe the world an apology for their record of cruelty and intolerance instead of asking for handouts.

It is a shame you feel that way about Christians. As Christians, we are to be examples of Christ. Many times we fail because we are human. Jesus Christ himself did not fail as we do; if you read about Him, you will find He was (and still is) perfect love.
