W.V. Man's Brutality Suit Moved To Federal Court

CHARLESTON, W.V. (AP) - Lawyers for a 22-year-old Mingo County man who says three West Virginia state troopers and several local officers repeatedly assaulted him have filed a lawsuit in federal court.

Calvin Wilkerson alleges in his lawsuit in U.S. District Court that the officers violated his constitutional rights when they were called to oversee his forced admission into a mental hospital. Wilkerson's lawyers said troopers repeatedly beat him with batons, kicked him and shot pepper spray into his face after picking him up
in January 2009.

After another round of beatings, officers released him into the cold without jacket or shoes, and allowed police dogs to attack him, according to the lawsuit.

In addition to state police and individual officers, Wilkerson is suing the Mingo County Commission, the sheriff's department and Williamson police.
