W.V. Redistricting Drafts Show Dueling Approaches

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's largest legislative district may remain that way under redistricting proposals being considered by its representatives.

Kanawha County's 30th House of Delegates District contains seven seats. With delegates asked to submit draft redistricting maps Tuesday, lawmakers from that district are leaning toward maintaining a multi-seat district.

Most of those lawmakers are Democrats. The county's Republican delegates are among those seeking to distribute all 100 House seats among single-member districts. They include House Minority Leader Tim Armstead. He proposes dividing his own district into single seats. Armstead represents the neighboring 32nd District, which now has three seats.

Lawmakers are also debating when and how to hold a special redistricting session next month.

The 2010 Census revealed population changes that require West Virginia to redraw its legislative and congressional districts.
