INSTITUTE, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia State University professors have taken a symbolic vote of no confidence in President Hazo Carter.
Media outlets report that 96 of 121 faculty members took part in the Faculty Senate vote Tuesday, and 67 voted no confidence in Carter. Fifteen supported Carter, and 14 abstained.
Carter is the longest-serving college president in West Virginia. He took over West Virginia State in 1987 and oversaw its transition from a state college to a university.
But Faculty Senate Chairman Tim Ruhnke says "institutional stagnation" has set in, and professors are dissatisfied with declining enrollment and a poor public image.
Although enrollment in state public colleges has been rising, the Institute campus expects about 200 fewer students this fall.
What happens next to Carter is up to the Board of Directors.
