UPDATE: 8-6-13, 7 p.m.

It’s officially part of American culture. The United States Department of Agriculture declares August 4-10 National Farmers Market Week.

Farmers markets are important outlets for agricultural producers. Thousands of farmers markets across the country offer fresh, affordable, convenient and healthy products directly from the farm to the table.

We have our very own right here downtown. You can find everything you need Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3rd and Market Street in Parkersburg.

As local as local gets. A farm-to-table cooking demonstration delights the Parkersburg Farmer's Market every other week.

Gene Evans, culinary director at West Virgina University-Parkersburg says the market gives him a chance to cook good, simple food.

He doesn't bring a lot of equipment so he makes sure even a novice cook can follow along.

He's there to inspire people to buy local food from the vendors that they can take home and create a meal as he did at the demos.

“It's something that's very important to me as a chef,” Evans says. “I think the quality of the things you get at the market is far superior to anything you'd get at a grocery store. We try to utilize that same approach in our curriculum here at the school.”

Evans says tomatoes grown in California and shipped halfway across the United States just aren't going to taste the same as those picked that night or day for the market.
