With the fall finally arriving here in the valley, it's never too early to know about fire safety for the season.

Local fire departments are stepping up to make sure people are aware of the importance of fall fire safety along with the laws they must follow.

In Ohio, people are prohibited from open burning in unincorporated areas during the months of March, April, May, October and November between 6am and 6pm.

It's also a good idea to ensure that your heating system is working properly and if needed change the batteries in your smoke detector.

"We do recommend that if you are going to burn in the evenings to maybe put it in a fire ring or some kind of fire pit of some kind and no fires whatsoever are allowed to be unattended by a competent person," says Barlow Volunteer Fire Chief, Troy Eddleblute.

Fire chiefs also recommend people to clear their roof and gutters of any build up debris and avoid storing any combustible items near heaters.
