The Parkersburg Fire Department says the fire at a Market Street apartment is being investigated as an arson.
Fire inspector Tim Flinn told WTAP the fire was "incendiary". Police are now investigating.
Officials say the fire broke out around 1 am Tuesday morning on the first floor of 1133 Market Street.
Captain Brian Drake says first reports indicated a woman was trapped inside the building.
After forcing entry into the apartment and extinguishing a fire in the main room, Drake says firefighters found the apartment empty.
He says no one was harmed.
Officials say the apartment is a total loss, but other units inside the building were unharmed.
Nearly 45 minutes after blaze the building was ventilated and residents were allowed back in.
