UPDATE 11-7-13 8:19PM
Sheltered workshop volunteers put some finishing touches on a sidewalk at the Marietta Armory.
WASCO along with the Friends of the Armory installed bricks to the Community Walk and prepared the ground for some new grass.
The volunteers put down 2,200 bricks for the new sidewalk people can sponsor in memory of a loved one.
Money made from the bricks will be combined with grant money to help finish the project.
"You know, the armory as a whole is just a reflection of the past, the present, the future . It's just a lasting place of tribute. You know at WASCO, we are the official graver for both walks and it provides jobs for our folks," says WASCO Business Development Manager, Nancy Harris.
Volunteers hope to have the armory open to the public by September of 2015.
If you would like to engrave someone's name on the community or veteran walk, please contact WASCO Business Development Manager, Nancy Harris at 740-373-3418 Extension 17 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
City officials got to tour a piece of history in downtown Marietta Wednesday afternoon.
Members of the city council along with others got to see renovations and repairs being made at the Armory Square.
The 99-year-old building will be a multi use community center for various events along with a bus station, kayak and canoe rental and a rehabilitation center for WASCO workers.
City officials say the bus station will help generate income for the facility and to downtown Marietta.
"It is a hub, a magnet that will draw people into downtown Marietta. All cities need to have a center that draws people that will then do secondary shopping in our merchants downtown," says Marietta City Councilman At Large, Harley Noland.
City officials say they hope to have the Armory Square open to the public and celebrate its centennial by the end of next summer.
