Taking dentistry to another level, a local orthodontist debuts digital impression technology.

Dr. Amy Smith, of Smith Orthodontics in Parkersburg says this is cutting edge technology, the latest on the market.

It takes pictures of a patient's teeth and after 10 to 15 minutes,
a screen displays a full digital model of the patient's mouth.

"This is relatively new; it's been around for at least two to three years... but in dentistry, this is the future," Smith says.

The orthodontist says everything is going digital, from x-rays to paperless charting.

She is thrilled to be at the forefront of the industry as the first orthodontic practice in the state of West Virginia to offer this to her patients.

"Patients love it, there is no goopy... impression material that makes you gag," Smith says. "It is so much more pleasant and patients can swallow and breath normally throughout the procedure. Kids love it, adults love it and it's so fast."

The biggest reason Smith says she wanted this for her practice and for the future is because it's more accurate.

Impressions are state of the art and everything Smith gets from the impressions -- appliances they order, Invisalign aligners... fit tighter, better and that means treatment is going to be more accurate.
