Mayors for Meals

“I do enjoy the meals and it saves me a lot of problems. When you're cooking for one it's not much fun, so I am really glad to be a part of the Meals on Wheels,” says Idell Fish, 91, of Vienna.

Some 5,000 Senior Nutrition Programs in the United State provide more than one million meals to seniors who need them each day.

Mayors for Meals went national in 2006, but this is the first time it's ever been done here.

“They deliver you know, a couple of hundred meals probably in this area or more and people depend on that for their one good meal a day in many occasions,” says Mayor Bob Newell. “So I was happy to participate in the program and this was their first time to do so.”

Vienna Mayor Rapp was called into a meeting so Councilman Jim Miracle stood in for him and was more than happy to take part.

“I treasure our elderly folk and think they have a lot to tell,” Miracle says. “Being able to visit them is a great thing to do.”

Councilwoman Barbara Lewis delivered meals on behalf of Mayor Jean Ford, who was called into the same meeting.

The mayors and council people got involved; they joined the fight to end senior hunger and encourage everyone to do the same.

“The mayors being involved in it was certainly appreciated by those delivering the meals and also the people receiving the meals,” Newell says. “They were quite surprised to see the mayor being the one handing them the meals.”

For one local senior, Meals on Wheels makes all the difference.

“Having my meal prepared so I don't have to worry about it or do anything and they're balanced meals,” Fish says. “I'm very happy.”
