WV Governor Supports Moving The Start Of Deer Gun Hunting Season

Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- Gov. Joe Manchin and the Division of Natural Resources are thinking about tinkering with the traditional start of West Virginia's biggest hunting season for deer.

The two-week gun season for bucks starts on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

Manchin and the DNR are considering moving the start to the Saturday before Thanksgiving to give hunters an additional day in the woods.

Opponents say the move is an attempt to allow Sunday hunting, something voters in 41 counties rejected in 2002.

DNR spokesman Hoy Murphy says Sunday hunting would have to be reviewed if the change is adopted.

The two-week season attracts about 350,000 hunters to the woods, and last year the DNR said 66,851 deer were killed.

Opening gun deer season early great idea. The Sunday hunting was miss represented when voted out as it was a issue of landowners personal rights to say yes or no to hunting on his property on Sunday because private not public land was the issue. A true Christian will go to church regardless of the issue. I would like to see one of the few rights we have returned to the landowner.

I say good ideal. We definately need a few extra days out in the woods. Look at last season. Many hunters didn't go out due to weather. Not enough deer were taken. I can already see an over population in our area. Just take a slow drive out an old county road. Hell go for a stroll in town and see whats laying on the sides of the road. I'm a christian and I still say bring in Sunday hunting also!!

I say "good deal" and even better if we can get the right, to hunt on Sunday, restored. Personally, I am tired of "Christians" determining how we all have to live. I pay my taxes and bills, work hard and can only hunt one day a week because of the ubsurd notion that God does not want hunting on Sunday. Give me a break here...it is time to start acting like adults and not dictating antiquated policy in the name of religion.

I think Joe Manchin has other and important things to worry about than the start of deer season. How about trying to help your state in creating more jobs so people won't get laid off anymore. Think about boys in charleston?????????

every body needs a break time for family. What is the state getting from this, they wouldn't do it unless they are getting something in return. If you keep pushing deer you will stress them and never get to kill one.
