Charleston, WV (AP) -- West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw is warning consumers about businesses offering to help avoid foreclosures or to modify mortgages.

McGraw said Thursday consumers don't need to pay for such assistance and should be leery of any company that wants an advance fee to provide them.

Instead, McGraw advises contacting the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which provides the services for free.

Consumers can call HUD's national hotline at 1-888-995-hope or go to the agency's web site at www.hopenow.com.

McGraw says information also is available at www.makinghomeaffordable.com.
