WV Colleges Urged To Re-examine Some Programs

Morgantown, WV (AP) -- Only two West Virginia colleges came through a productivity review of their degree programs with no recommendations for change.

The Higher Education Policy Commission said Monday that Shepherd University and West Virginia State University are meeting recommended standards.

Mark Stotler, the commission's assistant director of academic affairs, says each kind of degree should produce certain enrollment and graduation averages over a five-year period.

Those numbers are designed to help schools use resources efficiently, but aren't binding.

On May 1, the commission will recommend nearly every college put some programs on probation, meaning they'll be reviewed again in four years.

But schools can request programs be exempt, and stotler says many have.
