Staycations: Rediscovering the Mid-Ohio Valley Part III

There's a new adventure to try in Hocking County and it's the first of its kind in Ohio.

It's called Hocking Hills Canopy Tours. Guides take you across a network of 10 cables and five adventure sky bridges between the treetops.

You wear seat and chest harnesses that attach to two lanyards with safety clips. The lanyards attach to a track trolley that moves you along the cable.

The tour is complete with training on the ground and a scenic nature trail.

Owners say the course is designed for people of average mobility and strength who are in resonably good health.

Children have to be at least 10 years old and the minimum weight limit is 70 pounds and the maximum is 250 pounds.

It costs $85 a person but there are discounts for groups of eight, Hocking County residents get $10 off the price of their tour every Monday and "Kids Fly 1/2 Off" every Tuesday and Thursday.

Reservations are highly recommended. For more information log on to www.hockinghillscanopytours.com.

You don't have to go to Asia or Africa to see animals native to these continents. They are also living about an hour away from Marietta in Cumberland, Ohio at the Wilds.

The Wilds is made up of nearly 10,000 acres of reclaimed mine land that is set aside for rare, threatened, and endangered species. It's also set aside for people to come learn about the animals and reconnect to nature.

It is open to visitors to explore the pasture and see the many species on an Open-Air Safari or an enclosed bus called a Safari Transport.

It costs $27 per person for non members to ride the Open-Air Safari and up to $20 per person, depending on your age, for non members to ride the Safari Transport.

Starting next month, sunset safaris begin. Plus there are family and kids camps as well as a large private luxury cabin available to rent.

Then in July there will be a luxury couples getaway available.

For details log on to www.thewilds.org and be sure to tune in Wednesday to WTAP News at 6 when we will be zipping through the treetops in Hocking Hills.

More than a hundred years ago workers used to go about 180 feet below these hillsides of Beckley, West Virginia to mine soft coal, which is also known as bituminous coal.

The mine closed in 1910 and now it's owned by the city and only open to tourists.

Veteran miners take you deep into the mine to show you what it was like to be a miner back then, the advancements in mining today, and a representation of the coal camp.

Also part of the tour are late 1800s style cabins and the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia.

Tickets for all of these activities are free for kids three years old and younger. Prices go up from there to $20, depending on your age.

Nearby there is camping and plenty of outdoor activities next to it at New River Park.

For more information on the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and surrounding area log on to www.beckleymine.com or call 304-256-1747.

The West Virginia Division of Tourism is encouraging residents to check out vacation spots in their "big backyard" across the state. For vacation planning assistance, call 1-800-CALL WVA, visit www.wvtourism.com or stop by one of the many Welcome Centers throughout the state.

Tuesday on WTAP News at 6 we'll take you on an open air safari in southeast Ohio and on Wednesday we'll zip through the treetops in Hocking Hills.
