Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- Gov. Joe Manchin is being honored for his efforts to extend broadband access to all West Virginians.
A coalition of business and nonprofit organizations called the Internet Innovation Alliance chose Manchin for its inaugural broadband innovator award.
Alliance co-chairman Larry Irving lauded Manchin for driving efforts to create a broadband development council to track broadband access.
He also credited Manchin for setting up a broadband deployment fund that pays groups and others who successfully apply to expand access in under- or unserved parts of the mountain state.
Broadband access is considered important to boosting economic development and improving education.
Manchin will be the keynote speaker at the Alliance's symposium in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
