WVa To Offer Roadside Signs To Honor Wreck Victims

Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- Families wanting to memorialize loved ones killed in traffic accidents will soon be able to buy roadside signs from the West Virginia Division of Highways.

The signs are intended as a safe alternative to makeshift memorials erected along the state's highways.

Highways spokesman Brent Walker says makeshift memorials can be a distraction for motorists and a safety hazard for people who erect and maintain them.

An application for the memorial signs is being developed and is expected to be available online later this month at the Department of Transportation's web site, www.wvdot.com.

Each sign will cost $200, with a three-year renewal fee of $200 to pay for maintenance and replacement, if necessary.
