Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- A statue honoring West Virginia's female veterans will soon join its four male counterparts on the state capitol grounds.

The State Capitol Building Commission voted Wednesday to place the much-debated statue just southeast of the popular veterans memorial.

The 7-foot-6-inch bronze statue of a woman clad in fatigue pants, t-shirt and field cap will stand on a 9-foot base.

That puts it at eye level with the memorial's four statues.

Award-winning Charleston sculptor Joe Mullins created all five statues.

He was commissioned to sculpt the monument to women veterans more than a decade ago.

The project was held up after complaints that the statue was too masculine and should be wearing a skirt.

A panel of women veterans approved Mullins' design last year.
