WVa Gov Shelving Proposed Bonus For State Workers

Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- A $500 "bonus" for full-time West Virginia state employees is off the table.
The latest revenue figures prompted Gov. Joe Manchin to shelve the one-time payments that he had proposed less than two months ago.

The administration earmarked $34.7 million in unexpected surplus funds for the payments.

But officials now expect to need that money to balance the budget.

Manchin says he would not have proposed the payments had he seen the latest figures.

But he also does not regret calling last month's special session to address the bonus question.

No bonus passed during that session.

The House of Delegates enlarged the pool of state workers eligible for the payments and included retirees.

The senate balked at those changes, as did Manchin.
