Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- Police in Columbus have arrested a man accused of shining a laser at a medical helicopter that had just lifted off from a hospital.
Police say 22-year-old Jared Shapiro used a laser scope attached to a high-powered rifle.
The helicopter pilot reported that the green laser was pointed directly into his cockpit Sunday.
As a police helicopter crew responded and tried to pinpoint the source of the laser, their cockpit also was hit with a laser beam.
Authorities on the ground coordinated with the police helicopter to make the arrest.
Lasers can temporarily blind pilots.
Shapiro has been charged with interfering with the operation of an aircraft with a laser, a second-degree felony.
There was no information on whether Shapiro has an attorney.
