Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- Patsy Hardy knows she has her work cut out for her.

The newly-minted chief of West Virginia's Health and Human Resources, Hardy oversees a sprawling agency that accounts for roughly a fifth of all state and federal spending in West Virginia.

DHHR also has a state work force second in size only to the higher education system.

Before Hardy's appointment, the department faced criticism over its redesigned medicaid program.

It's also involved in a long-running court case involving behavioral health care.

Hardy says she's ready to address those concerns, and has been traveling the state to meet with employees, lawmakers and people served by the agency.
