It's a prank that really makes people mad.
A lot of kids think it's dumb fun, but it's a serious crime.
Washington County authorities are trying to build a case against a group they're blaming for a property damage crime spree.
The target - your mailbox.
The sheriff's office says four young people were involved with smashing eight mailboxes on Dugan Road in Dunham Township.
It happened last Wednesday night.
We caught up with a victim who says he chased the four teens in his car after they destroyed his mailbox with a baseball bat.
The man says two of them were in the cab of the pickup truck.
The other two were in the bed with the bat.
"They knew we were behind them and they acted all innocent like they didn't do nothing wrong. The thing is they gave themselves away when they said, 'We ain't got no ball bat and haven't been smashing mailboxes.' And we didn't say anything about it, about smashing our mailbox. So that pretty much told me that we had them," says Larry Grim.
Grim and Parkersburg Police caught up to the teens at the 7-Eleven on Emerson Avenue.
They were questioned but no arrests were made at that point.
But investigators say criminal charges are pending.
