DNR Forecasts Solid Raccoon, Ruffed Grouse Hunts

CHARLESTON, W.V. (AP) - The state Division of Natural Resources is forecasting solid hunts for raccoons and ruffed grouse this season in West Virginia.

Hunting seasons for raccoons and ruffed grouse run from Oct. 15 through Feb. 29.

The DNR's Wildlife Resources section says abundant food conditions allowed for a good carry-over of raccoons from last winter, while brood counts for grouse are running more than 60 percent higher than 2010 counts.

DNR assistant wildlife chief Paul Johansen says grouse can be found around thornapple, dogwood and thick beech clumps in October and November, while raccoons can be located in beech groves, ridge tops where red oak are located, and in thornapple and crabapple thickets.
