YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's top election official, a Republican, has blocked the nomination of the Democratic county chairman in Youngstown to serve on the county elections board.
Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted told Mahoning County Democratic chairman David Betras that he's unqualified to serve on the elections board.
He cited what he calls Betras' involvement in "wrongful conduct" as treasurer of an office transition account for former Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann. Democrat Dann resigned in 2008 amid a sexual harassment scandal and later was convicted of failing to disclose campaign expenses and improperly paying aides from campaign and transition account funds.
Betras said Monday that he cooperated in the Dann investigation and says his disqualification is politically motivated.
Betras says he hasn't decided whether to challenge the disqualification.
