The positive and negative effects of the natural gas industry on both sides of the river.

It's the findings of a new study focusing on the Ohio Valley.

The Multi-State Shale Research Collaborative researched the economic and community impacts of fracking in Wetzel County, West Virginia and Carroll County, Ohio.

Drilling is supporting local businesses, gas stations, hotels and farms in Carroll County.

But while jobs are being added, researchers say the bigger picture is a lot more complicated.

"While there are some economic benefits to fracking, they fall far short of what was promised and they come with costs to safety, to the environment, and to the community," says Amanda Woodrum, a researcher.

Carroll County is home to more than half of Ohio's oil and injection wells.

But Woodrum says a lot of drilling jobs are going to out-of-state workers.

Researchers say that's also the case in northern West Virginia.
