Five months after getting a little help, one local elementary school celebrates a big, new addition.

School officials at Madison Elementary dedicated a new garden Tuesday afternoon.

The garden will give teachers a place to take students for outdoor science lessons and math classes.

It also has a bit of sentimental value.

The garden was constructed in honor of Susan Plumbo Murdock.

She's the late mother of a former student.

Officials call the new teaching tool a "learning garden".

"This is a place where students are going to be coming out and actively learning about nature, flora and fauna. These are all indigenous West Virginia plants that are planted here. And the students wanted a place where animal life could come and thrive and so that they could study animal life," says Esther Lauderman, principal at Madison Elementary.

Erik Musgrave designed the garden for his Eagle Scout project.

His mother teaches at Madison.

Waste Management also played a huge part.

The company funded the garden with a $4,000 grant presented to the school in May.

Madison Elementary School is awarded a $4,000 Think Green Grant,
as part of the effort by Waste Management West Virginia and Keep America Beautiful for an educational garden.

Waste Management improves community environments through education, recycling, clean-ups and beautification programs.

WMWV Public Affairs Coordinator Amanda Marks-Cunningham says Madison Elementary is one of 20 nationwide recipients of this grant, so it's a big honor.

"It's always good to get outside, be in the sunlight, be in nature...learn about the surroundings that you live in and learn how you can keep our communities green and thriving," she says.

She says over the years repairs to the roof of the school damaged the site.

So it's a prime opportunity to give back to the community and let them restore this space with the grant money.
