Off-roading is big in the Mid-Ohio Valley and Mountwood Park has been the place to go for years.

The area's also used for hiking, biking and horseback riding - but it can be a dangerous combination.

Two years ago Wood County Commissioner Blair Couch had an idea - a separate park for ATV's and dirt bikes.

It took two years to find the right spot and get the Mountwood Park board to agree.

Right across from Mountwood, the new park has 21 miles of track - all marked to let riders know how rough the trails are.

It has taken six months and it's now ready for the grand opening on Sunday.

The ATV park is open every day, sunrise to sunset.

Anyone can become a member through Mountwood campgrounds.

It's just $50 a year or $12 a day.

The 600 acre course is right next to a campground - a fun activity for families and people of all ages.

By fall, ATV enthusiasts will have a place to ride.

Construction begins on a series of trails at Mountwood Park.

The riding area will be an unused tract of land near the park's campground.

That will keep the riders away from the campgrounds, and, more importantly, away from nearby residences.

"We're looking forward to the opportunity to avoid so many landowners having problems with ATV's crossing over their grounds," says Bob Buchanan, the park board president. "Now, they will have a park they can come to and ride all the time that they want."

A number of local businesses have donated labor, equipment and money for the construction project.

Buchanan says none of the cost is coming from taxpayers.

The project is expected to be completed by September.
