New Year, New Start

It's a new year, with new resolutions.

A way to start over, wipe the slate clean and strive for direction.

"Resolutions are what the climax to what you think this might be to sky's the limit," says Stephen Givens, a therapist with the Counseling and Wellness Center in Parkersburg.

YMCA member Ashton Weston didn't really need to start new.

"Or I guess to continue the existing ones that I already have from previous years past," he says. "That would be just to get bigger, stay healthy, to eat right -- gotta eat to get big, and that's what I'm living by."

YMCA member Melissa Derr sees the big picture.

"As far as New Year's goes, New Year's resolutions not so much... but more of an everyday, always trying to improve throughout the year," she says. "But it's very important to me to make those goals and stay with those goals."

When it comes to resolutions, you're at the helm.

"One thing great about starting a new book or having your own new chapter to write is that you're the author of this," Givens says. "You get to decide where the story goes."

Resolutions can give you something to strive for.

"Makes you have a goal that you can follow, but just strong sense of commitment is really all you need," Weston says. "I don't think you should have to rely on just it being a new year for you to make a proper change in your life."

Sometimes we set our goals really high.

"Too high for us to even achieve and then we feel kind of down or depressed because we didn't make those expectations," Givens says.

Derr follows a good diet, but wants to do more.

"I think it's important to stay consistent and even when I do fail -- just like New Year's resolutions, sometimes we give up on those, to try again, try again because you can never be great at something unless you fail first," she says.

Fine tune those goals into sub-goals to reach your primary goal and make connections.

"Starting the new year, starting fresh and new to being something even more," Givens says.

Have the life you deserve.

Make a resolution and stick with it -- that's the key.
