OVU Strike Out Cancer

Everyone is touched by cancer at some point in their life. It's all too familiar for Ohio Valley University's baseball and softball teams.

"My best friend back at home, her mom died when she was in eighth grade. It really made me appreciate who I had in my family and another friend on the team her family, her grandma had it and she's a survivor of it many times," says Ally Shepherd, a junior on the softball team.

OVU's sports information director is fighting cancer from the front lines after her sister-in-law gets a diagnosis no woman wants to hear.

"She just had surgery for a double mastectomy and several members of our family are going to walk in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk in New York City in October," says Brianne Lodato.

The teams have partnered with the Parkersburg chapter of the American Cancer Society to "Strike Out Cancer" during upcoming home games.

"It's a chance for the girls to show their support for the family and to the community, and we're also taking up donations at the game," says Rob Grahan, head softball coach.

They're giving back and doing good so others suffering with cancer are not alone.

"Most of these girls have had either family members or a friend or somebody who has been affected by cancer," Lodato says. "Then even at OVU personally, our own athletic director has battled with cancer."

Raising money, teaching awareness and promoting early detection.

"What we do today is big and helps a lot of people," Shepherd says.

If you would like to make a donation, but can't attend an OVU game, make your check payable to Ohio Valley University with Strike Out Cancer in the memo line.
