COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio Gov. John Kasich has signed into law a bill designed to limit abortions for girls under age 18.
Under the measure signed Friday, a judge considering whether to grant an abortion for a minor must first ask if she understands the emotional and physical consequences of the procedure. The judge also must ask if the girl has been coached in how to answer those questions.
The judge will then make the decision based on whether he or she believes the girl is mature and informed enough to make the choice to have an abortion.
Supporters say the law will curb judges who they think grant abortions too frequently. Opponents say the measure is aimed at scoring political points.
