West Virginia is celebrating a big milestone this year. In June, we'll be celebrating 150 years as a state.
Many local events are planned in Parkersburg to help celebrate.
Mayor Bob Newell says this birthday is extra special for Parkersburg. The State Constitution was written here, the first and second elected Governors are from here, and the first U.S. Senator and Congressman were also from Parkersburg.
With a day full of event, all hands are on deck to plan for the big day.
"We have asked the schools to get involved and there will be essay contents, there will be coloring, there will be art. The mayor has graciously said he will supply flags down the streets," says Women's Club Member, Barbara Sullivan.
"We're gonna help get the word out. We're really excited because we believe the recognition of this important time in our history is a great thing and we're glad that the women's club and the mayor have taken the lead to make this happen. We're just excited. We think it's going to be a great added value for any tourist visiting the area during that week and we look forward to help getting the word out for everybody," says Convention and Visitor's Bureau President, Mark Lewis.
"We're going to have an artist from the West Virginia area, we're not sure who that's going to be yet. We're going to work in concert with the mayor and with this program to support and get the audience revved up for the events that are going to be happening throughout the park, throughout the week," says Executive Director of Arts Bridge, Mark Lanyon.
Thursday, June 20th is the official birthday. A celebration will be held at Parkersburg City Park with music and birthday cake.
Many more events are in the planning phases and when those events are finalized, we will post them right here on thenewscenter.tv.
