Police Stepping Up Patrols for Holiday

Local law enforcement agencies are hitting the highways for the holiday.

West Virginia State Police are among those who will be out there trying to keep travelers safe.

AAA says 41 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this holiday weekend.

Nearly 35 million of those will travel by car.

Law enforcement agencies are stepping up their game this weekend, adding even more patrols than usual.

West Virginia State Police point out the 4th of July is known for being an alcohol-related holiday.

So they will be looking for drunk drivers, as well as aggressive driving and distracted driving.

"We do have three additional officers this holiday that we didn't have the last holiday, so that'll help us out some," says Sgt. James Stout, with the Parkersburg detachment. "But again, we're not out to necessarily do anything to anybody. We're just trying to help everybody enjoy a safe holiday."

Sgt. Stout adds the last few holiday weekends the number of accidents has been down.

Here's the bad news: AAA says drivers likely will pay the highest gas prices for Independence Day since 2008.
